I am Rebecca Ozanne, a PhD student from the University of Central Lancashire, and Forensic Psychologist in Training. Thank you for taking the time to read the participant information relating to my study.

I am completing research looking at the experiences of victims who have been abused in institutional/in care settings. This includes sexual, physical or emotional abuse that took place whilst residing in an institution such as boarding school, residential care, prison, borstal or any form of secure care. If you have experienced this form of abuse when you were under the age of 18, and feel comfortable and willing to write about these experiences anonymously for the purpose of this study, you will be asked to press continue below. This will take you to the next screen where you will be asked to confirm your consent. If your consent is confirmed, you may then proceed to the questionnaire.

You will not be asked to name abusers or to provide your name. I am interested in the impact of these experiences on you only, not in identifying details. Clearly, considering your abuse may be distressing for you and presented below are some sources of support to contact, should you need to.

As some of the information shared may be sensitive it is suggested that a private computer is used and that you log out when the session is complete.
The study has been approved by the university ethics board. If you have questions about the study you can contact me or my supervisor. If you wish to contact someone independent of the research regarding this study, please contact the University Officer for Ethics: OfficerForEthics@uclan.ac.uk

What you will be asked to do? If you agree to take part you will be asked to answer a variety of questions. The first questions should take no longer than 10-20 minutes to complete. The length of time taken to complete the final question will depend on the level of detail you choose to write. As a result of the nature of this study you must have experienced sexual, physical or emotional abuse to participate. You must also be over 18 years old currently to take part in this study. Participation is voluntary and you are free to discontinue at any time.

What will happen to my responses? Once responses have been sent, they can no longer be withdrawn as they will not be identifiable. If you chose to participate, please do not include any information that could be used to identify you (for example names of people) or the perpetrator(s). The responses of those participating will then be considered and findings identified and summarised. Direct quotes may be used in the write up of this research to illustrate some findings, but remember this research is anonymous. Data will be reported in the final PhD thesis and may also be used in peer reviewed journals, conference presentations, written feedback to research participants, or presentations. In addition to this, data may also be used and written up as part of the research component of my Stage 2 Forensic Training.
